MILWAUKEE – The CONEXPO-CON/AGG Next Level Awards celebrated exhibiting companies like KOHLER and their KSD Series small displacement diesel engines that are pushing the boundaries of construction technology and advancing the construction industry. KOHLER was chosen as a finalist for the inaugural Next Level Awards at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023.

The KOHLER Small Displacement (KSD) engine is a new entry in the sub-19kW (sub-25 hp) category with naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and turbocharged with aftercooler entries. The game changer for this engine is its electronically controlled injection combustion system that allows for more power from a compact engine package.

“We are enthusiastic and honored to be among the top 10 finalists in the Next Level Awards program. It is further recognition of the outstanding work of the KSD team, dedicated to providing customers with the best engine in the 25-hp range” said Vincenzo Perrone, President of KOHLER Energy - Engines. “This is another step that demonstrates Kohler's strong commitment to the industry and continued investment in new engines.”

The power produced by this small engine is impressive, with a peak torque of 120 Nm (88 lb-ft) at 1,400 rpm, with nearly eighty percent of that twist available as low as 1,000 rpm. Power output tops out at 18.4 kW (24.7 hp) at 1,800 rpm.

The low-end torque makes it possible for equipment operators to get more work done at lower engine speeds, saving fuel costs as well as wear-and-tear. As a matter of fact, the KSD is equipped with an oil filter that has a service interval of 500 hours, compared to the competitors' average of 250 hours.

In addition to the standard 3.7-liter oil pan, an upgraded 5.3-liter oil pan and oil and fuel filters ready for 1,000-hour intervals are also available for those needing more demanding duty cycles. Also, standard is the heavy-duty poly-V belt boasting a 2000-hour life, is up to 4 times longer than the average belt replacement of competitors. Moreover, the hydraulic adjusters require no adjustment. This is all covered by KSD's 3-year warranty, which guarantees up to 6,000 hours of protection.

The engine platform was designed with probable future emission trends in mind and the electronic control makes it simpler to incorporate hybridization projects in the same engine architecture.  The engine is 100% HVO compatible in any blend quantity and maintains the same envelop for gaseous and gasoline fuels.

“KOHLER’s KSD Series engine’s combination of electronically controlled ignition and thoughtful construction that keeps in mind future emission trends, makes for a combination of big power and small size that could generate innovative applications in construction equipment,” said CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Director Dana Wuesthoff. “And that’s why CONEXPO-CON/AGG, and it’s panel of judges from the Association of General Contractors, selected it as a finalist for the inaugural Next Level Awards.”
