As roadside enforcement becomes more technology-driven, contractors and specialized carriers face increasing pressure to prepare for inspections before getting on the highway.
Roadside inspections have evolved beyond routine weight checks. Enforcement agencies are using portable wheel-load scales, mobile inspection teams and advanced technologies to verify vehicle dimensions, configurations and permit information more accurately.
A boom that is not properly secured or equipment that is configured incorrectly can immediately draw an officer’s attention. Once an inspection begins, operators should expect additional checks, including vehicle weights and permit compliance.
In Illinois, LiDAR is used to scan vehicle dimensions, load setup and permit information, providing instant validation and enforcement during roadside inspections. As these technologies become more precise, even minor discrepancies are likely to be flagged.
STATE LINES CREATE COMPLIANCE RISK
Moving specialized equipment across multiple parts of the country introduces another challenge: regulations can change significantly at jurisdictional borders. A crane that meets permit requirements in one location may require additional review immediately after crossing into another. Weight thresholds that trigger engineering analysis are not consistent nationwide, making route planning and permit management more complex.

KNOW THE CRANE’S ROAD CONFIGURATION
Understanding how a crane is configured for transport is just as important as knowing its overall weight. A crane may remain compliant from a total-weight standpoint, but changes in suspension settings or transport configuration can significantly alter how weight is distributed across individual axles. Transportation agencies and enforcement officials evaluate both factors during roadside inspections
“Best case scenario – a flat or contiguous scale is the way to weigh mobile cranes,” Chris shares. Manufacturer specifications, configuration sheets and weight records should be readily available to operators in case questions arise during an inspection.
DOCUMENTATION BEFORE DISPATCH
Before dispatch, contractors should confirm that permits, approved routes, manufacturer specifications, configuration sheets, inspection records and any escort documentation are complete and available. Digital copies are usually acceptable, but printed documents should also be available in the vehicle.
The amount of documentation required can pile up quickly when a move crosses multiple jurisdictions.
Contractors should confirm that dispatch personnel, operators, pilot-car drivers and project managers are using the same information before the move begins. Consistent documentation reduces confusion and helps operators respond confidently during inspections. It also helps keep projects on schedule and minimizes avoidable transportation delays.

“This begins back at the yard, back at the office – planning, planning, planning,” Chris advises.

- Routes are verified.
- Equipment configuration matches documentation.

- Required escorts are arranged.
- Operators know the route and escalation contacts.
