Proactive Safety Tips for Excelling in a Changing Construction Industry

12/18/2018

Now more than ever, construction companies are facing challenges never dealt with before, including increasing safety needs and a skilled labor shortage. Contractors who want to stay ahead of the curve and ensure minimal business impact must not only understand where the industry is headed, but how to act now.

Dust Collection Systems

Safety continues to be a growing concern in the industry. As such, it’s important to choose a dust collection system designed for little maintenance, minimal air consumption, and easy use. Filters with large surface areas will capture more dust and require less frequent replacements—and choosing washable filters will further lengthen the filter’s lifespan.

Dust collection systems designed to quickly retrofit onto existing equipment without significantly increasing air consumption will help contractors comply with new regulations without the investment of a new drilling system or a larger air compressor.

Ergonomic Equipment

In addition, it’s inevitable that the U.S. will have a greater focus on ergonomics. Restrictions in Europe limit the length of time a worker can operate a handheld breaker, for instance, and it’s likely only a matter of time until restrictions increase in the States, as well. Keeping this in mind when selecting equipment now will ensure contractors don’t have to worry about being compliant later.

Ergonomics aren’t just a matter of future compliance, though. There’s a skilled labor shortage, with many who are in or entering the workforce simply not interested in doing physical labor.  Ergonomic equipment can help contractors combat this now by making their crews as comfortable as possible on the job.

E-Z Drill anticipated this more than 30 years ago, designing concrete drills that don’t require the operator to hold it during operation. This eliminates uncomfortable hand-and-arm vibrations that, with time, lead to injuries.

By taking time to carefully consider workforce trends, contractors can be positioned for success now and well into the future.
