Megaprojects Driving Renewable Energy in the U.S. in 2024

In 2024, this shift is most evident in the numerous megaprojects under construction across the country, each designed to harness sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power. Here’s a look at some of the most significant renewable energy megaprojects currently shaping the U.S. landscape. 

1. Vineyard Wind Project – Massachusetts 

One of the most ambitious offshore wind projects in the U.S., Vineyard Wind, is located off the coast of Massachusetts. This project marks a significant milestone as it is the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the country. Once completed, Vineyard Wind is expected to generate 800 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power over 400,000 homes. The project involves the construction of 62 wind turbines situated about 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. 

Vineyard Wind is not only a massive step towards decarbonizing the U.S. energy grid but also an important economic driver for the region. The project is anticipated to create thousands of jobs during its construction phase and long-term employment opportunities in operations and maintenance. 

2. Gemini Solar Project – Nevada 

In the sun-drenched deserts of Nevada, the Gemini Solar Project stands out as one of the largest solar farms under construction in the U.S. Located about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas, this 690 MW photovoltaic power plant is expected to supply clean energy to over 260,000 homes. The Gemini Solar Project also includes a significant energy storage component with a 1,400 MWh battery storage system, allowing it to supply power even when the sun isn’t shining. 

This project is a testament to the rapid advancements in solar technology and energy storage, which are essential for the grid's reliability as renewable energy becomes a larger part of the U.S. energy mix. The Gemini Solar Project will also help Nevada achieve its ambitious renewable energy targets, which include obtaining 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 100% by 2050. 

3. SunZia Wind Project – New Mexico and Arizona 

Spanning the states of New Mexico and Arizona, the SunZia Wind Project is a gargantuan wind energy development poised to become one of the largest in the world. This project includes the construction of over 900 wind turbines, which will collectively generate more than 3,000 MW of electricity—enough to power 2.4 million homes. The wind power generated in New Mexico will be transmitted via a 550-mile transmission line to population centers in Arizona and California. 

SunZia is a prime example of the scale required to transition to a renewable energy economy. The project is also notable for its efforts to minimize environmental impacts, such as the careful routing of transmission lines to avoid sensitive habitats. The energy generated by SunZia will significantly reduce carbon emissions in the southwestern United States and provide a reliable source of clean energy to millions of people. 

4. Champlain Hudson Power Express – New York 

In New York, the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) is an innovative renewable energy megaproject that aims to deliver clean hydroelectric power from Canada to New York City. This project involves the construction of a 333-mile transmission line, much of which will be buried underwater along the Hudson River. The CHPE is expected to supply up to 1,250 MW of electricity to the city, providing enough energy to power more than one million homes. 

The CHPE is particularly significant for New York City, which has committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2040. The project will help the city reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and lower its carbon footprint. Additionally, the CHPE is expected to create thousands of jobs during its construction and operational phases, further bolstering the local economy. 

5. Western Spirit Wind – New Mexico 

Another major renewable energy project in New Mexico is the Western Spirit Wind, a series of wind farms with a combined capacity of over 1,050 MW. This project, spread across multiple counties in central New Mexico, is part of the state’s broader strategy to become a leader in renewable energy. The power generated by Western Spirit Wind is transmitted to the electric grid through the newly constructed Western Spirit Transmission Line, which connects to existing infrastructure. 

Western Spirit Wind underscores New Mexico’s commitment to harnessing its vast wind resources. The project is expected to significantly contribute to the state’s renewable energy goals and reduce its carbon emissions by displacing fossil fuel-based power generation. Moreover, Western Spirit Wind has provided substantial economic benefits to local communities through job creation, land lease payments and tax revenues. 

THE FUTURE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE U.S. 

These megaprojects are just a few examples of the significant strides the U.S. is making in renewable energy. In 2024, the country is witnessing a surge in the construction of large-scale wind, solar and hydroelectric projects, reflecting the growing demand for clean energy. These projects are essential not only for meeting the nation’s climate goals but also for fostering economic growth and ensuring energy security.
