Having the right materials can help make a construction project successful. For construction professionals out at the jobsite, materials are advancing, and it will change the way work is done in the field.

This can vary from bricks, to metals, to mortars, to composites, to concrete. Materials are becoming smarter, and will impact the way buildings and infrastructure is built.

Making the Case for Composite Materials
Case in point: Composites. Technological innovation in this area of the business is actually leading to the use of the product as a replacement for aluminum and wood. Also, this can include a wide range of products such as gratings, stairways, decks, railing, and more that can be used in industrial and commercial. The technological innovation of materials have also led to the use of products that have complex shapes and would be impossible to build with other materials such as wood and steel.

As one example, carbon fiber has emerged as one of the largest segments among fiber types and will grow significantly through 2025. Composites offer superior properties such as durability, in comparison to other traditional materials.

Translucent Concrete
Another emerging material is translucent concrete, which has light-transmissive properties due to embedded light optical elements usually optical fibers.

This type of concrete offers innovative design options, while still offering high durability, due to the relatively small amount of fibers. In many cases, the concrete can also still be waterproof and frost resistant.

Construction materials are advancing, and it is changing how work is done at the construction jobsite today—and will continue to do so in the future.
