Crane Camera Eyes 3D Mapping and BIM

Hardware and software continue to advance for the construction jobsite—and now two companies are working together to transform how work is done in the field.

A new crane-based mapping solution is being launched. Called the Crane Camera, it will offer construction professionals an end-to-end application that combines data capture with a crane-mounted camera system, data processing in the cloud, and result analysis on the cloud platform.

Pix4D and Liebherr teamed to develop this fully-automated site monitoring solution, which uses on-site equipment to guarantee as little site intrusion as possible. Being able to visualize and monitor the progress of construction sites was key.

The solution collects site data on a daily basis, and provides a permanent overview on the as-built situation with 2D/3D deliverables (orthophotos, 3D point clouds, 3D mesh models, and digital surface models). This enables construction professionals to verify the BIM (building information modeling) process, check schedules, and control costs throughout the project.

The solution is available on a monthly subscription basis, giving professionals high flexibility with a rental option, which can be adapted to project duration. Each subscription includes a hardware warranty, unlimited automated data processing, and full online access to results.

This example of a new mapping solution will pave the way for additional technology to be developed to help the contractor on the jobsite.
