While construction technology can help improve productivity and insight at the construction jobsite, services and consulting companies are demonstrating how they can help complete scan-to-building information modeling projects in less time.
Consider the case of Sanveo, a firm specializing in building information modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) services.
The company is leveraging an indoor mobile mapping system on a large industrial manufacturing project in the central valley region of California. This project has a large footprint—roughly one million square feet—and is currently in the design phase.
One of the challenges is the schedule requirements were demanding and dictate that all the on-site work needed to be completed within a week.
After evaluating multiple solutions—both scanning and scan-to-BIM workflow—Sanveo decided to develop a custom workflow for the scan-to-BIM process. The result is it was able to exceed the expectations by completing the on-site scanning work within two days.
In addition to capturing all the existing conditions inside the facility, the team also used drones to gather all the as-built conditions of the roof.
This demonstrates how technology can help take traditional surveying techniques, introduce new technology, and complete a portion of a project in a fraction of the time.
