How Total Stations are Impacting the Construction Industry

Advances in digital technology have made the work of planning construction projects easier. This includes technology such as building information modeling (BIM) and total stations.

A total station is used in surveying to record features of a project. Traditionally this was done manually by rotating the instrument, but today total stations leverage data electronically for more accurate measurements.

For construction companies, this means being able to accurately position and layout points on the construction jobsite. Additionally, as-built data can be sent back into the BIM model, ensuring quality assurance.

Here are a few examples of how total stations are impacting the construction industry today and will continue to advance in the future:

Total Stations in Cities

Rapid urbanization is leading to increased mobility infrastructure. With the global population growing, more people are migrating to urban areas. This has led to the need for more infrastructure, chiefly transportation infrastructure, underground railway systems, roads, highways, bridges and more.

Total stations will help construction companies working on these types of projects accurately position and layout.

Total Stations in Mines

Mining survey is a specialist area of surveying involving the measurement, representation and management of data associated with mining operations, which could be either underground or open-cut mine workings.

These measurements allow connections to be made between different underground passages and establish the boundaries of mining claims and territories.

Mine surveyors are responsible for preparing and updating the entire surface and underground plans of a mine to account for new building and other structures and keep records of mining operations.

With these and other areas expected to surge, the use of total stations on the construction jobsite will also grow as well, leading to a more productive jobsite.
