Share:

12/22/2017

Fleet tracking is surging and impacting construction. While the technology has been around for quite some time, it is continuing to evolve and having a direct impact on how the industry does business.

The History of Fleet Management Solutions

The history of fleet management solutions dates back several decades. On-board vehicle computers first emerged in the 1980s and soon were connected to the network. Fast forward to today and mobile networks can now provide ubiquitous connectivity. All of this is now coming together to enable greater use of equipment and driver management, as well as mobile workforce management applications that can link vehicles with enterprise IT systems.

What is Fleet Management?

This is according to a new report from Berg Insights, which shows that fleet management is an ambiguous term used in reference to a wide range of solutions for different applications. The analyst defines the term as a vehicle-based system that incorporates data logging, satellite positioning, and data communications to a backoffice application.

The benefit of such technology for the construction industry are wide, as it can help improve safety, productivity, and overall business operation.

The Future for Fleet Management Solutions

Berg Insight is also predicting that fleet management is in a growth period.

Still, the market is also being impacted by the fact that this particular area has experienced consolidation, with number mergers and acquisitions taking place in 2017.

Going forward, the construction industry can expect more solutions that provide greater connectivity between the equipment out at the jobsite and the backoffice systems, enabling greater visibility into operations.
