GPS: How It Is Impacting the Jobsite

10/16/2017

The global positioning system (GPS) tracking device market has been prevalent for more than 15 years, but the uptake of GPS technology in machine controls has skyrocketed in recent years.

The key driving factors for the growth of the market include the increase in sales of commercial vehicles, smaller size, and affordable price. The introduction of cellular technology reduced the service cost, making GPS more accessible.

Concerns related to safety and security of high-value assets as well as the valuable data generated by these devices drive contractors to leverage the technology. Being able to track construction equipment and keep an eye on its health makes GPS a valuable tool at the jobsite.

One way that GPS is helping those on the jobsite is by creating a geofence at the site. Geofences are basically virtual boundaries on a map. It might be a square, a circle, or any other shape. Geofences can be used to automatically monitor and record entry and exit to the area within the “fence.” Geofencing is very adaptable and can be used in so many different ways for construction such as to save money or improve safety and security.

Using GPS solutions on the jobsite can help with several areas including: timesheet verification/billing, tracking arrivals and departures, asset allocation, asset protection, and equipment monitoring, just to name a few.

GPS vehicle tracking can be used for all types of equipment. The tracking gives contractors and site managers useful knowledge and insights into the way assets are used in the field. This knowledge offers the power to make informed decisions about project management and resource allocation to get the most out of valuable assets.
