Bringing Autonomous Equipment and Safety Together

8/21/2018

In the world of autonomous trucks and equipment, safety is paramount. And one large manufacturer is now moving toward even greater safety with a cloud-based safety service.

As an example, Volvo Trucks recently announced Connected Safety, which allows its vehicles to automatically alert each other to hazardous situations.

The service was initially rolled out for passenger cars back in 2016, but now Volvo Trucks is also rolling out a version of the service to expand the capabilities even further. As more vehicles are able to exchange real-time information, safety will also be heightened as well.

Here’s how it works: When the hazard warning lights are switched on, the truck sends a signal via the driver’s Internet-connected mobile phone to the trucks’ cloud service. From there, the data is sent to the service and an alert is transmitted to all connected cars and trucks approaching the location of the vehicle whose hazard lights have been activated.

Additional accident-prevention safety systems include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Active cruise control
  • Collision warning with emergency brake
  • And more...

In the long run, the cloud-based service can be expanded with even more safety-enhancing functions.

The system will be available in Sweden and Norway during 2018. While this is one example of how trucks and equipment are getting connected, the benefits just might extend to the jobsite in new and exciting ways in the future.
