6/12/2017

Until recently, AR (augmented reality) was only for early adopters. Innovators struggled with technical limitations, hype for smartglasses, and weak use cases. There hadn’t been a lot of practical applications of AR. However, that is all starting to change.

Lately, the market began a period of recalibration. For mobile AR, the most significant developments have been solid thinking about how to leverage AR to produce meaningful end-user benefits, the advancement of computer vision, and the integration of AI (artificial intelligence). AR is a useful tool on the jobsite. Programs can place the finished project in front of the contractors, along with elements of the job when building it.

According to a report from Tractica, the expanding use cases for mobile AR will lead to growth. During this period, it is forecasted that worldwide mobile AR revenue will rise from $749.0 million to $18.5 billion annually.

As the market continues to develop, AR will start to become an increasingly embedded mobile capability through software development kits and other platformization strategies, and AR will live within social media platforms, e-commerce apps, maps, and business applications. Mobile AR will power one of the next great user interface applications, visual search.

With the growth and innovations in this market, the applications for construction will only grow. The opportunities to use it on the jobsite will expand greatly for contractors.
