Will Humanoid Robots Assist You on the Construction Jobsite?

Humanoid robots could change construction. Today, many companies are unveiling new robots that can safely manage physical interactions between robots and their surroundings, and it could impact business in the future.

The worldwide shipments of enterprise robots will grow roughly 57 percent between 2016 and 2022. As this happens, robots are becoming more affordable, productive and smarter than ever, which will result in a number of construction businesses beginning to invest in robots to cut costs and increase profits. Robots could even help solve existing challenges and productivity gaps due to issues with human workforces.

Robotics Research and Development

Some companies are even creating advanced, humanoid robots that give a glimpse at what is to come in the future.

One example of this comes from Toyota, which has unveiled T-HR3. This represents an evolution from previous generations of humanoid robots, which were created to test the precise positioning of joints and pre-programmed movements. Rather, this robot can safely assist humans in a variety of setting, including at construction jobsites.

This robot is controlled from a master maneuvering system that allows the entire body of the robot to be operated instinctively with wearable controls that map hand, arm and foot movement to the robot. This gives the operator full range of motion of the robot’s corresponding joints and the master foot allows the operator to walk in place.

Also, the self-interference prevention technology embedded in the robot automatically ensures the robot and user do not disrupt each other’s movements.

This is one example of how robotics research and development could change the way business is done in the future—especially in environments where workers must perform tasks safely and precisely, while interacting with surroundings.
