How much money can Chile afford to invest in infrastructure?
Chile can invest up to US$12.4bn a year, or 4.8% of its GDP, in infrastructure by using more state and private funds, economist Luis Eduardo Escobar said. In a conference on infrastructure financing, Escobar said US$11.6bn a year could come from the treasury, including a current public investment of US$6.24bn, public debt issue, the use of sovereign funds and leasing of public buildings such as hospitals.

Argentina, Paraguay binational bridge study due before year end
Argentina and Paraguay should receive the results of a feasibility study on a project to build a bridge connecting the departments of Bermejo (Argentina) and Ñeembucú (Paraguay) before the end of the year, according to Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color. Uruguayan engineering firm CSI Ingenieros, which is leading the study, is examining six potential options for linking the two departments.

Parsons to build Mexico City airport expansion, says LA mayor
US construction and engineering company Parsons won a contract to build the Mexico City airport expansion. "Parsons...will form a consortium with Mexican companies to build a new international airport in Mexico City," said Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti during a visit by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to the US city. The airport expansion would cost 120bn pesos (US$9.16bn), according to the SCT.

Rio de Janeiro airport pushes expansion plans
Macaé city in Rio de Janeiro state is requesting federal government support to expand its airport, according to a Brazilian government release. The city's plan is to become a regional cargo transport leader and to boost its support to local oil industry, specifically providing offshore logistics for the the Campos basin. Building a runway to support larger aircraft is one of its main objectives, the release said.

Chile, Argentina greenlight US$1.4bn tunnel
Chile and Argentina agreed that each country would provide financing for their share of the US$1.37bn trans-Andean Agua Negra tunnel, removing a critical obstacle to launching a tender. Argentina will contribute US$986mn, given that 72% of the tunnel will be located on its side. Chile will provide the remaining US$384mn. Chile's public works minister Alberto Undurraga and his Argentine counterpart Julio de Vido signed the deal.

Paraná again suspends US$2bn metro tender
Brazil's Paraná state audit court suspended for a second time a 4.67bn-real (US$2.06bn) tender launched by state capital Curitiba to build and operate the city's first metro line. Although the tender bid submission date was set for Monday, court representative Ivan Bonilha has decided to uphold a suspension decision by public works supervisory board Difop, based on various irregularities, the state government said in a release.
