4/30/2024

Every year, the International Code Council (ICC) dedicates May to enhancing building safety across the globe. The 44th annual Building Safety Month will begin on May 1, 2024, with the theme "Mission Possible" to underscore the significance of building codes and the collective effort required to ensure a safe built environment. Here’s how construction contractors can actively participate and benefit from Building Safety Month.

Campaign Overview and Weekly Themes

Building Safety Month is a month-long educational campaign that raises awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring the safety of the built environment. The 2024 campaign kicks off in Washington, D.C., and encourages everyone to engage with building safety. This initiative is celebrated worldwide through proclamations, educational events, and community gatherings, orchestrated by the ICC, its members, and global communities. The campaign is structured around weekly themes designed to deepen understanding and enhance engagement.

Week One (May 1–4)
“Understanding the Mission” Focuses on the critical role of building codes and safety standards.

Week Two (May 5–11)
“Preparing a Building Safety Plan” Emphasizes planning and preventive measures.

Week Three (May 12–18)
“Learning from the Pros” Offers insights from seasoned professionals on best practices in building safety.

Week Four (May 19–25)
“Engaging Your Community” Encourages collaborative efforts between contractors, community members, and local governments.

Week Five (May 26–31)
“Celebrating Success in Building Safety” Highlights achievements and advancements in building safety.

Compliance with Building Codes

A core element of Building Safety Month is the strict adherence to building codes. As ICC’s Board President Stuart Tom remarked, building safety should never be taken for granted. It is imperative for contractors to ensure that building codes are not only followed but also actively promoted within their projects. These codes are essential as they establish the minimum requirements to safeguard health, safety, and general welfare for building occupants and the community.

Contractors should utilize Building Safety Month to audit their compliance levels, identify improvement areas, and conduct training sessions to keep teams updated on the latest building codes and safety practices.

Innovations and Technology

The campaign also highlights the importance of adopting new technologies to enhance building safety. Contractors are encouraged to explore and integrate innovations such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), drone technology, wearable safety devices, and advanced building materials that improve the overall safety and efficiency of construction projects.

Investing in such technologies can lead to better compliance with safety standards, reduced costs, and shorter project timelines, which aligns with the "Mission Possible" theme of collaborative and innovative safety enhancement.

Fostering a Culture of Safety

Building Safety Month provides an excellent opportunity for contractors to reinforce a safety-centric culture within their organizations. This means going beyond compliance to creating an environment where safety is a shared responsibility. Celebrating safety milestones, recognizing workers’ safety efforts, and regular safety drills can enhance this culture.

Engagement with stakeholders—including local governments, code inspectors, and the community—promotes wider safety awareness and compliance, facilitating smoother project executions and boosting community trust.

Community Engagement and Resilience

The fourth week of the campaign, “Engaging Your Community,” focuses on the importance of community involvement in building safety. Contractors can participate in community outreach programs, conduct workshops on disaster preparedness, and host seminars on sustainable building practices.

Such engagement not only educates the public but also promotes community resilience, ensuring that buildings can withstand adverse conditions and contribute to sustainable development.

Contractor Participation

During Building Safety Month 2024, contractors are encouraged to actively engage with the campaign’s "Mission Possible" theme. By participating in educational events, adopting new technologies, and enhancing safety culture, contractors not only contribute to the immediate success of their projects but also support the broader goal of ensuring safe, sustainable, and resilient communities worldwide. Embracing the principles of Building Safety Month helps fulfill the collective mission of protecting the spaces where people live, work, play, and learn.

Contractors can download tools from the Social Media Hub and use the hashtag #BuildingSafetyMonth2024 and/or #BuildingSafety365 when sharing on social media.
